The eTA is an online pre-screening system launched by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) between 2015 and 2016. Before eTA, visa-exempt citizens had no way to check their admissibility until they reached a Canadian port of entry. Now, travelers can fill a simple online application before departure, making the process faster and more reliable when entering Canada.

Note: Until September 29, 2016, people from visa-exempt countries could board flights to Canada with just a valid passport. As long as they met basic entry rules, they were usually allowed in. However, since then, most visa-exempt travelers must obtain an eTA before boarding a flight to Canada. Exceptions include U.S. citizens, who need neither a TRV nor an eTA, and lawful permanent residents of the U.S. (Green Card holders).

Who Needs an eTA?

Most citizens from visa-exempt countries who plan to travel to Canada by air for temporary stays need an eTA. Applicants must provide personal details and answer questions about criminal history, health issues, and previous travel refusals.

Once approved, an eTA is usually valid for 5 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If your passport expires, you must apply for a new eTA.

The eTA application requires the following information:

• Full name
• Date and place of birth
• Gender
• Current address
• Nationality
• Passport and travel document details

For people with physical or mental disabilities who cannot apply online, paper applications and other special arrangements are available.

Exemptions from eTA Pre-Approval Include:

• United States nationals
• Applicants who already hold a valid Canadian temporary resident visa
• Certain foreign diplomats
• Commercial aircrew members
• Native residents of France living in St. Pierre and Miquelon
• Travelers with a valid U.S. visa passing through Canada only for refueling
• Passengers transiting through Canada with proper visas for their final destination
• Individuals on official duties under the Visiting Forces Act
• Study or work permit holders returning to Canada after a visit to the U.S. or St. Pierre and Miquelon
• Her Majesty in right of Canada and members of the Royal Family
