According to a new report, Canada is ranked as the third safest country in the world for travelers in 2025.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP), the North American travel insurance company responsible for the annual safety rankings, placed Canada in the third spot, just behind Iceland (#1) and Australia (#2).
Canada surpassed countries like Switzerland (#5), New Zealand (#6), the United Kingdom (#13), and Sweden (#15) in safety rankings.
Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP) surveyed American travelers on various aspects of travel safety, including protection from crime, terrorism, and diseases, as well as safety for specific groups such as travelers of color and LGBTQIA+ individuals.
These ratings were supplemented with additional data, including the Global Peace Index, Numbeo data, and average GeoSure Global scores for major cities in each country. A “weighted score” was then calculated to reflect each country’s overall safety.
Canada’s Top Rankings in Sub-Categories
Canada ranked highly in several sub-categories used to determine its safety:
- Safety from violent crime: #2
- Safety from terrorism: #2
- Transportation safety: #1
- Health measures: #1
- Safety for women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people of color: #2
In addition, the report included a “Hall of Fame” ranking, which tracks countries that have consistently ranked in the top 10 since BHTP began its annual rankings in 2018. Canada secured third place in this Hall of Fame, following Switzerland (#1) and Australia (#2).
Wildlife and Road Safety in Canada
When traveling through Canada’s vast landscapes, particularly on highways like the Trans-Canada Highway, it’s important to be aware of wildlife that may pose a danger to drivers. Canada’s diverse wildlife, including large animals such as bears, moose, elk, caribou, and wolves, are often found near roadways and can lead to accidents if encountered unexpectedly.
- Bears and moose are commonly found in the middle stretches of the Trans-Canada Highway.
- Elk are more often seen farther west, while caribou are found in the northern parts of the country.
- Wolves are prevalent in many regions, and white-tailed deer, known for causing accidents in both Canada and the United States, are frequent road hazards.
Travelers are advised to stay alert, especially during dawn and dusk when animals are most active, and to follow all road signs warning of wildlife crossings to minimize the risk of accidents.

2024 Rankings
In 2024, Canada achieved an impressive ranking in several international indices:
- U.S. News Best Countries Rankings: Canada was ranked 4th best country in the world with an overall indexed score of 94.1. This ranking was due to its strong performance in categories such as quality of life, entrepreneurship, social purpose, and agility1.
- QS World University Rankings: Canadian universities continued to perform well, with several institutions ranked among the top global universities.
- OECD Better Life Index: Canada consistently ranks high in various indices measuring factors such as human rights, quality of life, safety, happiness, prosperity, and sustainability.
How to Visit Canada
Travelers to Canada typically need to apply for a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) before entering the country.
Americans, green card holders, and citizens of France living in St. Pierre and Miquelon do not require an eTA but must present valid travel documents, such as a passport, when entering.
It’s important to note that having the necessary documents does not guarantee entry. Travelers must also meet Canada’s admissibility requirements. Certain factors, such as past criminal activity, can make a traveler inadmissible.
